Tumani Tenda - Farm Tour

Afterwards we relaxed and walked around the camp and then Nic and I decided to do a farm tour with the local guides. We walked through the village and met some of the men shelling ground nuts to be planted. Anyone who buys seed for their crop in bags should realize the luxury of their lives now – imagine having to hand harvest all the seed for your crop!!!
The guide also showed us some ‘monkey bread’. It is a seed pot with fluffy yellow stuff filling the area around the seed in the pod. You eat the yellow stuff. It is quite nice.
We then saw the little shelters that they keep the goats in at night and the fields where they plant the cassava plant. Cassava is like a potato but it stays firm with cooking over a long time. I eat the ground cassava as a porridge in the morning sometime – cooked with milk and sugar – it tastes a little bit liked mashed potato but with less flavor.
I put in some photos for interest – you can see that methods for keeping cheeky goats from going through fences are the same all over the world, that sea shells are fine as calcium blocks for cows and Alison – see Nic does eat fruit!
