The Gambia River Boat Cruise

After Wassu we walked around three kilometers to Kantur. It was the most amazing walk because now the rains have come people are out working in the rice fields and the people we walked past were harvesting the rice.
Then we had to wait two hours in Kantur for the boat. Unfortunately the children called Taubab non-stop until we found a bar to hide in and the tour operator had his phone switched off. We decided not to eat because we were getting lunch on the boat. At quarter past three some men in a boat came and assured us the trip was going to happen and at quarter to four we left and found out lunch on the boat was cancelled. Although it was a frustrating start the trip was amazing – we were lucky enough to see hippos and chimpanzees. Two animals that are the highlight of the boat trip but most people don’t get to see. The hippos are living wild in the river (the photo is on zoom we didn’t get close) and the chimpanzees are being rehabilitated into the National park which is a series of islands on the river.
At the end of the trip the boat drivers saw a sick fish swimming circles in the river and scooped it out for their tea – which is the photo I put in.
We got back to Janjanburreh in a rush because Phil had cooked us tea. We had a quick shower and were about to go when the skies opened. Phil gave us a ring and said not to worry. So in the end all Nic got to eat all day was tapalapa for breakfast and a few chocolate biscuit we were lucky enough to have bought in the morning. And I made him travel half a world for the pleasure!
