Abi's Party, Paulina's Going Away

The weekend following Halloween was a party for Abi, the eight year old daughter of one of the volunteers and Paulina, a UN worker’s going away.

Abi’s party was a lot of fun with children’s games such as pin the tail on the donkey and pass the parcel. She had two friends over so the kids played while the adults chatted much the same as parties at home. The parents of her friends were really interesting people. They are over here volunteering by helping Gambian bee keepers to develop their businesses.

After Abi’s party Max, another VSO volunteer in the Kombo, and I went on a bit of a mission to find Paulina’s party which was in Kotu an area of the Gambia I don’t know that well. It is one of the more well off areas which was definitely apparent when we entered the house where the party was. It was four or five stories with a bathroom on every floor and a rooftop with a view of the whole Kombo region. The party was an interesting mix of people. Many were employed by different aid organizations such as Unicef and some were volunteers from different parts of the world, although mostly America, Canada and the UK (I was not the only Australian as Katie was there but she had to leave early as her husband needed to meet a delegation off the plane).

I just wanted to note that Paulina, in the purple dress, had her dress designed by a young Gambian dressmaker who is hoping to study design in Milan. You can’t see the details in the picture but the dress is amazing!
